How Do You Give Thanks When You Don't Feel Thankful?
Being told to be grateful when you are struggling can feel like being told to be quiet. Scripture asks for thanksgiving far more bluntly than most people are comfortable with — and it never asks you to pretend the hard thing is not hard.

In Luke 17, ten men with leprosy call out to Jesus from a distance — they were required to keep their distance, which is part of the point. He tells them to go show themselves to the priests, and as they go, they are healed. All ten. The healing is not the part the story is interested in.
One turns around and comes back. Nine keep walking toward the life that has just been handed back to them, and you can hardly blame them. But one interrupts his own good news to say thank you, and Jesus notices out loud that he was the foreigner — the one with the least claim on any of it.

Note the wording: give thanks IN every circumstance, not FOR every circumstance. You are not asked to be glad about the thing that is hurting you.
