What If You're Sad and You Don't Know Why?

Sadness with a cause can at least be pointed at. Sadness without one is harder to carry, partly because every conversation about it starts with having to justify it.

A story for this

David does not explain his either. Psalm 42 never identifies what is wrong. What he does instead is speak to his own sadness rather than obey it — "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" — which is a question, not a diagnosis.

And he does it three times in a single psalm. Not once, decisively. Three times, because it did not hold the first time or the second. That repetition is the realistic part, and it is left in.

"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Psalm 42:11, KJV

He questioned the sadness instead of obeying it. He also had to do it again the next day.

A short prayer

God, I cannot tell you what is wrong because I do not know. Sit with me in it anyway.

Questions people ask

Why am I sad for no reason?

Scripture does not require a reason before it takes sadness seriously. Psalm 42 never names what is wrong — the psalm is entirely about the condition and not at all about its cause, and it is still in the book.

What does the Bible say about sadness?

That it can be spoken to rather than merely endured. "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? ... hope thou in God" (Psalm 42:11) is a person addressing his own feeling out loud. Notably he says it three times in one psalm, which does not suggest it worked instantly.

Is it wrong to be sad as a Christian?

Nothing supports that. Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb knowing he was about to raise him (John 11:35). Psalm 34:18 says "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart" — nearness to sadness, not disapproval of it.

What is a good Bible verse for sadness?

Psalm 42:11 for sadness you cannot explain. Psalm 34:18 for the sense of being alone in it. John 11:35 — two words, "Jesus wept" — for the question of whether God finds grief acceptable.

You don't need a reason to talk about it.
