I can't stop. There's always more to do. If I rest, everything falls apart.
Stopping feels selfish when people still need you. The disciples were in exactly that position — so busy they could not eat — and what they were given was not one more town. It was a boat and a quiet shore. Rest was never the reward for finishing.
The conversation
The child: “Daddy God, I can't stop. There's always more to do. If I rest, everything falls apart.”
God: “I know how full your hands are. But I want to show you what I told My disciples when they were exactly where you are now.”
The child: “They were burned out too?”
God: “They had been healing, teaching, traveling without a break. People were coming and going so fast they didn't even have time to eat. Sound familiar?”
God: “And I didn't say 'push harder.' I didn't say 'one more town.' I said 'Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.'”
The child: “You told them to stop? In the middle of everything?”
God: “In the middle of everything. The needs didn't disappear. The crowds didn't stop coming. But I pulled them away because rest isn't a reward for finishing. It's a requirement for continuing.”
God: “Notice the words: 'Come ye yourselves apart.' Not 'go rest.' Come. With Me. Apart. Away from the noise, the demands, the endless line. Rest is a place you come to, and I'm already there.”
The child: “But what about everything that needs me?”
God: “If you don't come apart and rest, you will come apart. That's not a threat — it's how I made you. You're My child, and children need to stop.”
The child: “It feels selfish to rest when others need me.”
God: “It's not selfish. It's obedient. I commanded rest before work. The sabbath came before the week. Rest is the foundation, not the reward.”
The child: “Then I'll come apart. With You. Before I come apart without You.”
God: “That's all I'm asking. Come. Rest. I'll handle what you set down.”
"And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat." Mark 6:31, KJV
