I can't sleep. What if I lose my job? What if I get sick?
Worry works ahead of itself, spending today on a tomorrow that has not arrived. The argument made here is not that the fears are silly — it is that anxiety has never once added anything. Birds work hard and still do not lie awake. Today was only ever given enough for today.
The conversation
The child: “Daddy God, I can't sleep. What if I lose my job? What if I get sick?”
God: “You're carrying tomorrow's weight today. I made you for one day at a time.”
The child: “What did He say?”
God: “'Take no thought for the morrow... Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.'”
God: “First He pointed at birds. 'They sow not, neither do they reap.'”
The child: “But birds don't have bills.”
God: “And yet they eat every day. They work. They just don't lie awake.”
God: “'Consider the lilies. They toil not, neither do they spin.'”
God: “Then the question: 'which of you by taking thought can add one cubit?'”
The child: “So what do I do instead of worry?”
God: “'Seek ye first the kingdom of God... and all these things shall be added.'”
The child: “Just today. I'll do today.”
God: “Tomorrow has grace of its own.”
"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Matthew 6:34, KJV
