Everyone needs me and there's only one of me.

Doing everything yourself can feel like the faithful option. Jethro watched Moses judge a nation single-handed and called it what it was — not devotion, a slow wearing away. Moses handed over nearly all of it and remained the leader.

The conversation

The child: “Daddy God, everyone needs me and there's only one of me.”

God: “Moses did that. Judged every dispute himself, dawn to dark, alone.”

The child: “Did You tell him to stop?”

God: “His father-in-law did. 'The thing that thou doest is not good.'”

God: “'Thou wilt surely wear away... thou art not able to perform it alone.'”

The child: “But if I don't do it, who will?”

God: “Other people. Moses just hadn't asked them yet.”

God: “Doing it all yourself isn't faithfulness. It's a slow wearing away.”

The child: “Handing things over feels like failing.”

God: “Moses handed over most of it and stayed the leader.”

The child: “What do I keep?”

God: “The hard cases. Bring those to Me. Let the rest go to other hands.”

The child: “Then I'll ask for help tomorrow.”

God: “And it won't cost you a thing.”

"Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone." Exodus 18:18, KJV
