I keep doing the math on the future and it never adds up. I don't see how we'll have enough.

Five loaves and two fish were never going to be enough by ordinary math — but math isn't what gets multiplied here. He never asks for enough; He asks for what's actually in your hands today.

The conversation

The child: “Daddy God, I keep doing the math on the future and it never adds up. I don't see how we'll have enough.”

God: “I've done that math with you every time you've run it.”

The child: “Then You know the numbers don't work.”

God: “There was a crowd of thousands who needed to eat, and all anyone could find was five loaves and two fish. The math didn't work there either.”

The child: “So what happened?”

God: “I never asked anyone to bring enough. I asked them to bring what they had.”

The child: “Five loaves for thousands of people? That's nothing.”

God: “It wasn't about the loaves. Everyone ate. There were twelve baskets left over.”

God: “Math isn't what gets multiplied when I'm the one holding it.”

The child: “So I don't need to have next year figured out?”

God: “You need to hand me today's five loaves. I'll take it from there.”

The child: “That feels like giving up control.”

God: “It's not giving up. It's handing it to someone who's never once run out.”

The child: “Okay. Here's what I actually have today.”

God: “That's more than enough to start with.”

"And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full." Matthew 14:20, KJV
